Disturbing stories from the tsunami-stricken lands Indonesia, India and Sri Lanka are beginning to surface which tell of evangelical Christian missionaries, often with the backing of wealthy Christian organization in the United States, exploiting the tragedy and its human victims by tying assistance and relief aid to the conversion of the Hindu and Muslim populations.
When the Virginia-based missionary group World Help announced plans to airlift 300 'tsunami orphans' from Banda Aceh to raise them in a Christian orphanage causing the Indonesian government stepped in to temporarily ban adoptions.
From India surfaced a story about Samanthapettai, a fishing village in Tamil Nadu hit by the tsunami, where some Christian missionaries reportedly refused to distribute biscuits and water unless the Hindu recipients agreed to convert to Christianity. When TV reporters approached the nuns, they refused to comment and left.
All of which makes me wonder: What Would Jesus Do?
