Amongst other dubious moves proposed to reduce spending and deficits in Britain, the new coalition conservative government has announced plans to sell off publicly-owned ancient forests such as Forest of Dean and Sherwood Forest to private firms who could cut down trees, sell off lumber and develop lands administered under laws established in the Magna Carta of 1215.
Ministers of the recently-elected coalition Conservative-Liberal Democrat government propose the sale to private developers in order to raise funds to help pay off the budget deficit. Private developers would be allowed remove trees to make way for holiday resorts, golf courses, amusement parks and adventure playgrounds.
The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs plans to dispose of about half the land held by The Forestry Commission--about 1.85 million acres of woodland.
