'Bag ell' or 'bay gell?'

I can remember the days when bagels were so much a regional (NYC) food that it was impossible to get them fresh baked and hard to find frozen in plastic in the supermarket case. (Lenders, remember?)

These days bagels are available everywhere, often, alas, with little resemblance to the original creation.

But what mystifies me most is how the variant pronunciations came about; hence, this special North Coast Cafe poll.

Do you say 'bag-ell" or 'bay-gell'? Or, some other variation?
